Commissioner for Children’s Rights, Pastor Godfrida Sumaili, called for concerted efforts in protection of children’s rights in a statement issued at Mukuni Park in Livingstone during commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

She said the commemoration of 20 years of the CRC “should remain us about the many children who are suffering from many ills perpetrated by adults.”

She said everyone was expected to contribute to the fight for children’s rights following Zambia’s ratification of the CRC 20 years ago.

“The fact that the government took time to ratify the CRC 20 years ago is a sign that Zambia is committed to protecting the rights of the children. We need everyone to be involved in the protection of children’s rights,” she said.

Southern Province Education Officer, Mr. Festus Moongo, said the Education Board in Southern Province was committed to protecting children’s rights, in particular, the rights to education.

He said the Board had allowed the formation of student councils in schools in the province to help address human rights issues concerning children.

President for the Student Council at Mayinga Basic School in Siavonga, Ms. Easter Mvula, observed that the right to education was extremely important for children to develop themselves in all aspects of their life.
